N. Balakrishnan

Research Activities


Professor Balakrishnan has been actively involved in research work in diverse areas of Statistics, and has made significant contributions to many areas including Models and Analysis of Medical and Lifetime Data, Life-Testing and Reliability, Order Statistics, Robust Inference, Distribution Theory, Multivariate Distribution Theory, Characterization Theory, Inferential Methods, Industrial Statistics, Nonparametric Inference, Outliers, Multivariate Analysis, Bayesian and Empirical Bayesian Inference, Combinatorial Applications to Probability and Statistics, Record Values and Processes, Theory of Runs and Scans, Waiting Time Problems, Ranked Set Sampling, and Statistics in Finance.

Conferences Organized
 

Professor Balakrishnan, in addition to organizing numerous sessions in various scientific conferences and meetings, has organized the following International Conferences:


• During June 25-28, 1997, he organized an International Conference on Combinatorial Methods and Applications to Probability and Statistics at McMaster University, Canada, for four days. It was a very successful conference with around 140 registered participants. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Birkh¨auser, Boston, in 1997.
• During October 10-11, 1998, he organized the IISA 1998 – International Conference at McMaster University in which around 230 participants took part. The proceedings of this conference is soon to be published by Taylor & Francis, London, England.
• He was one of three organizers of an International Conference on Recent Advances in Probability and Statistics – A Conference in Honor of Theophilos Cacoullos which was held at Athens, Greece, during June 3-5, 1999. This conference had around 140 registered participants. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Chapman and Hall, Boca Raton, in 2001.
• He was one of six organizers of an International Conference celebrating the occasion of Professor C.R. Rao turning 80. This conference, entitled Statistics: Reflections on the Past and Visions for the Future, took place at the University of Texas at San Antonio during March 16-19, 2000.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Conference on Goodness-of-fit Tests and Model Validity which was held at Universit´e de Paris – 6 (Paris, France) during May 29–31, 2000. It was a successful conference with around 150 registered participants. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Birkh¨auser, Boston.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Conference on Recent Developments in Probability and Statistics which was held at University of Madras (Chennai, India) during December 21-22, 2000. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Narosa Publishing House, New Delhi.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Symposium on Statistical Methods for the Analysis of Olympic Record Data which was held at Universite de Bordeaux-2, Bordeaux, France, during September 4-6, 2001.

• He was one of three organizers of an International Conference on Characterizations, Models and Applications which was held at Antalya, Turkey, during December 7-9, 2001. The proceeding volume of this conference is soon to be published by Taylor & Francis, Philadelphia.
• He was one of three organizers of an International Conference on Ranking and Selection, Multiple Comparisons and Reliability with Applications that was held at Chennai, India, during December 28-30, 2002. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Birkh¨auser, Boston.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Workshop on Statistical Inference for Semiparametric Models which was held at Mount St. Michel, France, during May 15-17, 2003. The proceeding volume of this conference was published by Birkh¨auser, Boston.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Conference on Statistical Inference and Applications that was held at Almaty, Kazhakstan, during June 9-12, 2003.
• He was one of three organizers of an International Conference on Distribution Theory, Order Statistics and Inference that was held at University of Cantabria, Santander, Spain, during June 16-18, 2004. The proceeding volume of this conference is soon to be published by Birkh¨auser, Boston.
• He was one of four organizers of an International Conference on Statistical Methods in Health Sciences that was held at University of Nantes, Nantes, France, during June 23-25, 2004.
• He was one of eight organizers of an International Conference on the Future of Statistical Theory, Practice and Education that was held at Hyderabad, India, during December 29, 2004 - January 1, 2005.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was elected a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 1995.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was elected a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics in 2006.

  • Professor Balakrishnan is an Elected Member of the International Statistical Institute since 1992.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was elected a Fellow of the Turkish Statistical Society in 2003.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was the Distinguished Eugene Lukacs Professor at Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, Ohio, USA, during 2005.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was the Santalo Lecturer at Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Madrid, Spain, during 2006.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was elected an Honorary Member of the Greek Statistical Institute in 2006.

  • Professor Balakrishnan was awarded the Don Owen Award by the American Statistical Association in 2008.

  • In addition to an excellent research career, he has won McMaster Students Union Teaching

Award on five occasions, three from the Faculty of Science, one from the Faculty of Engineering, and one from the Arts & Science Program.
